Letter processing in Russian: Does orthography matter?
نویسندگان
چکیده
Prior research has suggested that the identification and encoding of letter positions within strings might be influenced by orthography. Letters in transparent languages (e.g., Greek) with regular grapheme-to-phoneme correspondences are processed sequentially, whereas letters deep English) parallel. In three experiments, we used a visual search paradigm to test this hypothesis on Russian—a relatively language. Experiment 1, measured speed Cyrillic at each position five-element real words or pronounceable pseudowords. 2, performance was compared random strings, 3, non-linguistic symbol strings. Our results reveal pattern similar English, excluding strictly serial computation, which is inconsistent orthography hypothesis. Moreover, showed lexical status nature string (linguistic/non-linguistic) affect response times for Russian therefore must accounted models word recognition.

The focus of this paper is the representation of heterographic homophones (words which sound the same but are spelled differently, e.g., 'knight' vs. 'night'). Ad...
متن کاملProcessing Spontaneous Orthography
In cases in which there is no standard orthography for a language or language variant, written texts will display a variety of orthographic choices. This is problematic for natural language processing (NLP) because it creates spurious data sparseness. We study the transformation of spontaneously spelled Egyptian Arabic into a conventionalized orthography which we have previously proposed for NL...
